Today, market research firm Canalys shared its Q2 2022 global smartphone shipments report.
Here are some highlights:
Shipments fell 9% year on year in Q2 2022.
As inflation keeps climbing, consumers’ disposable income has been affected (prompting a shift from mid-range to budget phones).
Samsung takes first place (21% market share) in part due to its strong budget device offering. Apple takes the second place (17% market share); demand for the iPhone 13 remaining high. Chinese companies on the other hand have struggled in their home market.
Canalys analyst Toby Zhu notes that “some emerging markets’ tightening import laws and customs procedures” have delayed shipments.
As some economists predict that inflation will not decrease significantly until 2023, Q3 and Q4 2022 could continue to be challenging for smartphone manufacturers.
