The Netherlands unveils nationwide contactless transport payment system
This accomplishment is the result of a partnership with Mastercard
The Netherlands has partnered with Mastercard to introduce a contactless transit payment system called OVpay across the country.
Here are some key points:
This open-loop system allows travelers to conveniently tap in and out using their debit card, credit card, or digital wallet.
OVpay has been launched by Translink and public transport companies, enabling all modes of public transportation, including trains, trams, buses, and metros, to accept contactless payments.
The implementation was facilitated by Mastercard's support in implementing transaction processing rules and incorporating software updates.
The new system aims to improve accessibility, reduce congestion, increase efficiency, and address sustainability challenges. Visitors to the Netherlands can also benefit from the convenience of OVpay.
This project eliminates the need for passes and tickets, except for those with subscriptions.
Prior to this, Mastercard has assisted other countries, including the Maldives, in launching similar digital transit payment systems.
