The Netherlands has partnered with Mastercard to introduce a contactless transit payment system called OVpay across the country.

Here are some key points:

  • This open-loop system allows travelers to conveniently tap in and out using their debit card, credit card, or digital wallet.

  • OVpay has been launched by Translink and public transport companies, enabling all modes of public transportation, including trains, trams, buses, and metros, to accept contactless payments.

  • The implementation was facilitated by Mastercard's support in implementing transaction processing rules and incorporating software updates.

  • The new system aims to improve accessibility, reduce congestion, increase efficiency, and address sustainability challenges. Visitors to the Netherlands can also benefit from the convenience of OVpay.

  • This project eliminates the need for passes and tickets, except for those with subscriptions.

  • Prior to this, Mastercard has assisted other countries, including the Maldives, in launching similar digital transit payment systems.
