Some quick thoughts on Microsoft's mega investment in OpenAI

Today's announcement by the Big Tech company is rather opaque...

Today, Microsoft announced it is renewing its partnership with OpenAI (the maker of ChatGPT and DALL-E among other things).

The press release was rather brief and didn’t provide many details.

Here the key points:

• Microsoft will leverage OpenAI’s expertise to develop supercomputing systems.

• OpenAI’s AI models by will be used across Microsoft’s consumer and enterprise products.

• Microsoft will remain OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider through its Azure division.

And that’s about it… There was no mention of any investment amount or timeframe. Bloomberg reports that the Big Tech firm is investing 10 billion dollars “over multiple years” (as per a source involved with the deal).
