Disney secures a $1.5B stake in Epic Games

The company wants to establish an ‘entertainment universe’ with Fortnite

Disney has announced a major partnership with Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, to develop a new "games and entertainment universe" that will integrate Disney's extensive catalog of characters into the Fortnite platform.

 Here are a few key points:

• As part of the deal, Disney will invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games. 

• The collaboration aims to create a vast online space where players can interact with characters and storylines from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and other franchises using Epic's Unreal Engine. 

• This partnership represents Disney's largest foray into gaming and promises significant opportunities for growth. 

• The collaboration builds on Epic's efforts to expand Fortnite beyond its original battle royale format, with recent additions such as Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival. 

• The integration of Disney characters into Fortnite's ecosystem is expected to enhance the game's appeal and further monetize the platform through in-game purchases and digital merchandise inspired by Disney's beloved characters.

• While a release date for the collaboration has not been announced, the companies suggest it will be launched "soon(ish)," indicating that players won't have to wait long to experience the new entertainment universe.
