AI and the GRAMMYs
The Recording Academy of the United States stated that music containing AI elements can be considered for nomination under certain conditions
The Recording Academy recently made changes to the Grammy Awards to accommodate technological advancements in the music industry.
Here are some key points:
The new guidelines state that only human creators are eligible for the highest honors, explicitly excluding AI-created works. Recording Academy CEO and President, Harvey Mason Jr., clarified that music containing AI elements can still be considered for nomination, but the AI portion itself would not be eligible for a Grammy.
If an AI or voice modeling program performs the lead vocal on a song, it would be eligible in a songwriting category, but not in a performance category.
The Academy wants to ensure that technology enhances human creativity rather than replacing it.
The decision comes after the rising popularity of AI-assisted songs (e.g. Heart on My Sleeve, the result of AI-created lyrics and voices using Drake and The Weeknd).
The Recording Academy claims it conducted extensive research, including holding tech summits, to establish those AI guidelines.
While it remains uncertain what submissions will be made, Mason expects to see a significant number of songs created with AI technology this year.
The 2024 Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on February 4, 2024, at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena.
