Mercury Research recently released a report on CPU shipments, and as you can imagine it’s not too rosy.
Here are some key points:
With a 34% year-over-year and a 19% quarter-over-quarter decrease, x86 CPU shipments from Intel and AMD saw an unprecedented collapse in Q4 2022.
This was mostly brought on by a lack of PC demand, surplus inventory, ongoing inflation, and a weak economy.
BUT besides 2020 and 2021, the entire processor market revenue was still greater in 2022 than in any previous year.
So all in all, the situation could be a lot worse, yet 2023 could be a challenging year for CPU manufacturers and related sectors. The “PC pandemic boom” sure seems to be over for good.
